What is the Early Intervention approach?

Supporting Kids and Families

In essence, our role as Early Intervention Therapists is to provide assistance for children with a range of learning and developmental issues.

Our aim is to help children and young people of all ages to function at home, in play, and in their learning environment confidently and independently. We work collaboratively to support families by providing strategies for home, kinder or school to promote the child's development and independence.

Working collaboratively means that we involve you in every step of the therapy process. We work on goals that are meaningful to you and your child, and together we explore strategies that work specifically for you and your family.

If you or your child's teacher or GP has noticed that something is amiss in terms of your child’s development, then one of our Early Intervention Therapists may be able to work with your child to help him/her improve their skills and confidence in specific areas.

Areas In Which Early Intervention May be Able to Assist Your Child

We may be able to assist your child if you have noticed that they:

Sensory Processing - display sensitivities (or have "melt-downs") when they are exposed to certain textures, clothes or food. They may have issues with processing sensory input which could be contributing to their ability to self-regulate when modulating sensory input.

Academic –  underachieve or have difficulties concentrating at school;

Behavioural – struggle to settle at school, are easily distracted or have problems with anxiety or socialising;

Daily Living Tasks – have organisational or co-ordination problems resulting in them struggling with everyday tasks like dressing and eating;

Co-ordination and Physical Development –  struggle with movement and co-ordination when catching a ball or playing on playground equipment.

Handwriting Issues – have difficulty with forming letters which can point to problems with fine motor skills.

Emotional Behaviour – suffer from anxiety, mood disturbances, extreme anger, or have tantrums and "meltdowns" frequently. These are common in younger children, but the extent and intensity of these tantrums and emotional outbursts may be indicative of a deeper problem.

The good news is all of the above issues can be addressed by one of our qualified therapists. We love seeing the change in children that we work with and in assisting them to achieve their full potential.

All of our Early Intervention Therapists have relevant qualifications in either Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Art Therapy, Psychology or Counselling.

They are trained in our main therapy approach ‘DIR Floortime’ and provided with ongoing mentoring, supervision, courses and training. Give us a call, and we can help match the right therapist to suit your child’s goals and needs.
